Face ID works with masks, the latest iOS update details are here

iOS 15.4 from Apple is available for download and Face ID will now work with a mask. Users will now be able to unlock their iPhone, and automatically fill in passwords using Face ID with the face mask turned on. Apple says the feature scans unique features around the eye area for authentication, though it cautions that Face ID works best when the entire face is visible. However, users do not need to wear a mask while setting up Face ID.

Apple iPhone users can go to Settings > General > Software Update to download and install iOS 15.4. The update is about 1.25GB in size, so make sure you can access WiFi when installing. The file size can be larger if you haven’t updated your iPhone for a while now. You can also set a reminder for the update to be installed overnight while the phone is charging.

Here’s a look at everything the new iOS 15.4 update brings.

Face ID

First, Face ID will work while wearing a mask. This option can be accessed from Settings after installing the new update. Users will be able to access Apple Pay and automatically fill in their password in Safari using Face ID while wearing a mask. Users will have the option not to use Face ID with a mask as well from the settings.

The capability is limited to iPhone 12 and later devices, which include iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, Pro Max, and the latest iPhone 13 lineup. Users of the Apple iPhone 11, iPhone XS, and iPhone X series will not be able to take advantage of this feature. Therefore, they will still have to remove their mask in order to unlock the device.

Apple’s iOS 15.4 update also brings new emoji, including faces, hand gestures, and household objects, to the keyboard. The handshake emoji now allows users to choose separate skin tones for each hand.

FaceTime, Siri, vaccination cards

The new update will allow SharePlay sessions to be started directly from supported apps. Meanwhile, Siri can now provide time and date information while offline on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 or later. Finally, the immunization cards feature applies to residents of the European Union, where support for the EU digital Covid certificate in the Health app allows them to download and store verifiable versions of the Covid-19 vaccine, test results and recovery records. The Covid-19 vaccination cards in Apple Wallet now support the EU Digital Covid certification format.

Other Features

Other features with the update include support for Italian and Chinese on translating web pages in Safari. The Podcasts app now adds episode filters for seasons, as well as episodes that have been played, not played, saved, or downloaded. Custom Apple iCloud email domains can be managed from Settings, while the News app will provide improved discovery of audio content in the Today Feed and Audio tabs. Users will also be able to use the camera on the keyboard to add text to notes and reminders. Furthermore, Shortcuts now supports adding, removing, or querying tags using reminders.

Apple has also changed the Emergency SOS settings. Now users can connect while waiting to access this. Furthermore, the five-piston dial is still available as an option in the SOS Emergency Settings

The telephoto in Magnifier now uses the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max to help users see small objects. Apple will also allow users to include passwords saved in their own notes in Settings.

This update also comes with some bug fixes. This includes an issue where the keyboard was inserting a full stop between typed numbers, news tools in Today view not opening articles when clicked and photos and videos not syncing with iCloud Photo Library.

Another issue the update is working on is the Speak Screen Accessibility feature ending unexpectedly within the Books app. Also fixes an issue where Live Listen would not turn off when it was turned off in Control Center.
