The PC market in India grew by 45 percent in 2021; HP, Lenovo and Dell lead: Canalys

India’s PC market grew 45 percent in 2021, with shipments of desktop computers, laptops and tablets reaching 18.6 million units, according to Canalys research. This makes 2021 the best growth year for the PC market in India since 2013 when shipments grew by 29 per cent.

Although the second wave of the pandemic and lockdowns has led to a decline in business activities, it has fueled the demand for computers as students and professionals find themselves studying and working outside their homes for extended periods. Laptops accounted for most of the market growth, accounting for 63 percent of all shipments with 11.8 million units, up 49 percent year over year.

Tablet PC shipments reached 4.4 million units, which was a 48 percent increase over the previous year. Desktop shipments fell 3 percent with only 2.4 million desktop computers shipped. But that number still represents a 27 percent increase over the figure recorded in 2020.

HP led the market (including tablets) that shipped 4.6 million units in 2021, with a market share of 25.1 percent, followed by Lenovo, which shipped 4.2 million units with a market share of 23 percent. Dell came in third place by a large margin, having shipped 2.5 million units, with a market share of 14 percent. Samsung and Acer came in fourth and fifth with a market share of 7.2 percent and 6.8 percent.

When it comes only to laptops and desktops (excluding laptops), HP Lenovo and Dell continue to hold their positions with a market share of 25.1%, 23% and 14%, respectively. Samsung’s long absence from the Indian PC market means that Acer comes in fourth with 8.4 percent market share, while Apple comes in fifth with 4.7 percent market share.

“While this year looks great on paper, it is important to consider 2021 not just as a stand-alone year but in relation to 2020,” said Jash Shah, Research Analyst at Canalys, in a press release. When the pandemic hit in 2020 and PC supplies dwindled, sellers naturally prioritized Western markets, such as the United States and Western Europe, leaving markets like India with low supply. PC shipments in India fell 3% in 2020, adding to pent-up demand, which was amplified by the second wave of COVID-19 in the first half of 2021, leading to the record growth we have seen this year,” he added. Shah.

According to Shah, the huge jump in shipments recorded in 2021 is unlikely to be repeated in 2022 as there will be major corrections in the consumer market, especially affecting laptops and tablets. But there will be strong demand from SMEs and enterprise customers as business returns to normal, according to the analyst.
