Another live action on DC’s famous Joker villain appears in the final minutes of Matt Reeves’ hit new movie Batman. Playing Barry Keoghan, this version of the Joker is mostly seen and unheard of in The Batman, talking to Riddler from the shadows of his Arkham hive. But last week, Reeves and Warner Bros. released a deleted scene from the movie that gave fans a much better look at the new Joker, and paved the way for his relationship with Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
Unlike more recent iterations of the Joker, Keoghan’s version has physical issues dating back to birth. This Joker has problems caused by illness and defects, not just traces of chemical solutions or knife scars around his mouth. After the scene was released, Reeves opened up about Joker’s backstory during an interview with diverse.
“It’s like phantom of the opera“He has a congenital disease where he can’t stop smiling which is awful. Half of his face is covered in most of the movie,” Reeves explained.
“It’s not about a copy where he falls into a vat of chemicals and his face is disfigured, or what [Christopher] Nolan did, as there is some mystery about how these scars are carved into his face,” the director added. “What if this man from birth had this disease and cursed? He had this smile that people stared at and it was hideous and terrifying. Even as a child, people would look at him in horror, and his response was to say, ‘Well, a joke was played on me’” This was his nihilistic view of the world.”
At this point, there’s no word on when we might see Keoghan’s version of the Joker next. Batman He’s almost certain to get a sequel, but Reeves is also working on an HBO Max series dedicated to Arkham. It would make sense for the Joker to appear there as well.
“There might be places,” Reeves said of Joker’s upcoming appearance. “There are things that I’m very interested in doing in the Arkham space, probably for HBO Max. There are things that we’ve talked about there. So that’s very possible. It’s also not impossible to have a story going back to where the Joker comes into our world.”
