PS5 add a much needed feature in the next update

Sony has confirmed that it will be adding a new feature to PlayStation 5 consoles later this year that many fans have been asking for for some time. While not all PS5 owners will be able to take advantage of this feature, those with a high-end TV will certainly be happy to see its arrival as part of an upcoming system update.

set out on PlayStation BlogSony recently announced that it will add a variable refresh rate to PS5 consoles later in 2022. VRR is a feature only compatible with TVs that feature HDMI 2.1 functionality. In simpler terms, it improves the performance of games running on PS5 and makes them look smoother than before by syncing the TV’s refresh rate directly to the PlayStation 5 console.

“We are also happy to share that the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is set to be released on PS5 in the coming months,” Sony said on the PS Blog about this new addition to the latest PlayStation console. “This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by reducing or eliminating visual elements, such as frame speed issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes are rendered instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR with a game patch and future games may include support for VRR at launch.”

Sony also went on to say that VRR is something that can be applied to games that don’t directly support this optimization. Whether or not there are any direct enhancements for these PS5 games is something Sony hasn’t guaranteed, but either way, VRR is something gamers can toggle on and off as they see fit when the feature is rolled out.

Right now, the biggest question surrounding adding VRR to PS5 consoles comes with the arrival of this update. As Sony has clarified, the patch won’t be dropped until “the coming months,” which means we don’t have a firm release date yet.
