The 2022 Academy Awards in Memoriam honors Sidney Poitier, Evan Reitman, Betty White, and more

The 94th Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, and while this year’s ceremony saw some changes from past festivities, one Academy Awards tradition remained. Share the award ceremony honoring him in remembrance, honoring those we have lost over the past year. Since the Academy Awards last year, we’ve said goodbye to many beloved Hollywood personalities, including William Hurt, Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Donner, Evan Reitman, Betty White and Sidney Poitier.

This year’s tribute is set on a live choral performance of a mix of songs performed by the sample choir, including some more upbeat selections. A little differently from previous years, the tribute also saw some presenters come on stage to honor those who were lost as well. Tyler Perry gave a poignant tribute to Poitier, Ghostbusters star Bill Murray appeared during the segment to honor Reitman while Jamie Lee Curtis, an adorable pup also took to the stage to honor Wyatt who, in addition to being a Hollywood legend was also a lifelong hero to the animals. You can watch the video without the choir performing or paying tribute on stage in the video below.

“Friends, family, peers and people, we all know there will be a loss,” Jill Scott said in closing the tribute. “This is where we must honor legacies, the moments that tickled and reminded us of them. Here where we celebrate the lights, where we say names and applaud our hands in gratitude.”

The In Memoriam segment from the Academy Awards has been a staple of the Academy Awards ever since the 66th Academy Awards in 1994. The tribute was largely developed by producer Michael J. Shapiro who talked about the way the tribute touches people at The Wall General Street Journal.

“Some people said they cried when they saw some of the pictures,” Shapiro said. “I love being able to touch someone with pictures of people we grew up with in dark theaters.

“And I said, ‘It should be a tender farewell to all these people, and we should see them when they are at their best,'” he added.
