The Baltimore Ravens want to extend Lamar Jackson’s tenure, but he’s not answering their calls.
As much as the Baltimore Ravens want to extend quarterback Lamar Jackson’s franchise yesterday, Tango needs two.
If these feathered birds are to flock together after Jackson’s Year 5 options season in 2022, the former Heisman Cup winner and NFL MVP will eventually have to put pen to paper. It has been solid Jackson represents himself in the negotiation process. While he’s leaning against the pre-set intake manhole compensation out of Louisville, this is a different animal.
Jackson either wants to go on a Joe Flacco-type Super Bowl tour in a contract year, has other plans in mind outside of Baltimore or has been too busy with life to go to the Ravens facility and get the deal done. All the while, the Baltimore brass and Ravens Flock are excelling in what appears to be Jackson’s contract season. He’s playing a very dangerous game by doing this now.
Let’s look at Jackson’s combinations while playing with an expired contract at this point in the game.
Lamar Jackson is still without signing with the Baltimore Ravens after the 2022 season
If Jackson enters next season with an expired contract and gets out, he’ll make more money than Flacco did. He doesn’t have to win the Super Bowl, because he already has the best player in the league under his belt. Jackson may have a lot of leverage, but keep in mind that crows can use the franchise on him if necessary. Oddly enough, this might be something Jackson would want.
It will once again have a predetermined amount of cash on its way, as it will guarantee the average annual salary of the top five players in the league. If he wanted to, he could let the crows tag him again. However, it’s something Baltimore won’t want to do because Jackson will cost a premium with every year he plays on the franchise tag.
In order for Jackson to come out with force, he would need acting for this to be possible. Russell Wilson doesn’t make it to the Denver Broncos without Mark Rodgers. Deshaun Watson does not appear again with the Cleveland Browns without David Mulugheta. Matt Ryan doesn’t land the Indianapolis Colts without Tom Condon. The complexities with seismic trading are significant.
In the end, the biggest concern here is the risk of infection. The way Jackson plays the game, he leaves himself vulnerable when he gets out of the pocket and takes on the role of the runner. He may be an elite athlete, but one bad hit could cost him his career as it did his former backer and Heisman Trophy sibling’s brother, Robert Griffin III. This is a dangerous game.
Jackson’s approach to representing himself is incredibly gloomy and totally brilliant.
