The Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago White Sox are exchanging a pair of fishermen who were drafted once in the first round but why?
What do the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago White Sox have in common? Both play in the American League. They should all be vying for a playoff point this year. They also seem to agree that it is time for a trade deal.
On the last Sunday before Opening Day, Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire is sent to the White Sox in exchange for catcher Zach Collins.
This pair of first-round pre-draft picks are transforming institutions. A few years ago, it would have been a huge deal with the opportunity to change the future of every organization. In April of 2022, this was a secondary move with much smaller implications.
Blue Jays and White Sox make deals in order to make deals
McGuire’s career began in 2013 when he was the 14th pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ended up with the Blue Jays when he was sent with Francisco Liriano and Harold Ramirez to Drew Hutchison. He made his league debut in 2018 and has seen a bit of excitement every year since then. However, hitting just .248/.297/.390 during those 400 trips to the plate didn’t show enough for the Blue Jays to consider it more than a backup.

Collins’ career also could have started in 2013 when the Cincinnati Reds took him in the 27th round. He did not sign and would later be determined as the 10th overall pick by the White Sox in 2016. The success of the minor league did not end in the major leagues. Collins leaves Chicago with a slash of 0.95/.315/0.330 and doesn’t have much hope of anything other than spare slashes.
This is one of those late moves that fly under the radar due to the insignificance of their appearance. This is exactly what it is. Two busts in the first round in the same position change uniforms.
There will likely be no winner in this deal. It is a trade in order to do something.
