On the island of Portland, off the coast of Dorset, an unexploded World War II bomb was discovered. From 1921 to 1994, it was the home of Portland United where the bomb was detonated.
Grove Corner, the club’s former home, was purchased by a quarry in 1994, and the club moved. The body was discovered under what was known as Portland Playground shortly after the quarry began excavating where it was found.
The bomb was said to have been under the central circle in some reports, but its exact location under the stadium is unknown.
According to reports, it is a miracle that the bomb has not detonated in the 50 years that Portlanders have lived above the device, which was said to be very sensitive.
4,000 residents of Portel were forced to flee the exclusion zone, and experts worked to defuse the bomb, believed to have been dropped in 1943 during a German attack on the area.
