Before giving up three runs in the first inning, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole was unhappy that the game itself did not start on time.
Opening day start times are more of a form of speech, more of a physical entity that Cole can rely on. At this point he should know it.
Considering the players’ introductions, the first stadium gala, and the national anthem, opening day at Yankee Stadium is special for fans and players alike. However, Cole was only aware of his first struggles last season. He wanted to change that on his first start against Boston, and his late start time may have played a role in what was a tough first game on opening day.
Cole was visibly unhappy in the bunker, as the video above shows, and wanted the game to start at its original start time. This did not happen.
Yankees: Gerrit Cole struggles early against Red Sox
Cole had a five-year stint against the Red Sox last season, a sign he would like to change in 2022. His first stats were also a far cry from the rest of the general stats that helped him in AL Cy Young finished second last year.
However, the fast-paced Homer allowed Gerrit Cole and a double shortly thereafter to Xander Bogarts, presenting the Yankees with some familiar difficulties to start his campaign.
Hopefully that will change for Cole. As for opening day start times – Cole might set his clock back 5-10 minutes. It will do him some good.
