Nonverbal communication is a funny thing. What might be a meaningful, but innocuous, gesture in one culture might be nonsense or even offensive in another—and it’s the latter scenario that prompted Marvel Studios to change a poster in order to Doctor Strange in a multiverse of madness In Italy. on Reddit (via CBR), one user shared a poster for the upcoming Marvel Studios movie showing Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) using a left-handed hand gesture similar to what most Americans know as “rock ‘n’ roll” or “rock music.” To the Italian version that completely changed the hand gesture because the “rock on” gesture means something offensive in Italy.
Apparently, in Italy and in the Mediterranean region, the original gesture – “trumpets” – can mean different things depending on how the hand is placed. The pose on the poster is said to be an offensive or rude way of calling someone a “cuckold”. This is definitely a good reason to make an edit to the label. Of course, fans in the Reddit post’s comments had fun with the mod themselves, changing the hand gesture to mean a variety of other things from other cultures as a joke. The Internet, it’s a fun place.
As stickers for the next Dr. Gharib The go sequel, Marvel recently released the official IMAX poster for the movie as well. This poster shows Doctor Strange’s face in the center of the image in the broken glass figure used in other marketing materials, with various reflections of the character, as well as Wanda Maximoff, featured in the cut. Pre-tickets for the film also went on sale this week, and in just the first 20 hours, the film broke the record for pre-sale tickets for 2022 Fandango.
“Epic first day of pre-sale Doctor Strange in a multiverse of madness Proves that fans are very excited to experience all the blockbuster excitement, goosebumps, and surprises that Marvel Studios has to offer,” said Eric Davis, Fandango Managing Editor in a statement.
Disney’s official synopsis of the movie is as follows: “To restore a world in which everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the supreme wizard, Wanda, the most powerful scarlet witch in the Avengers, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that is no longer from It can only be done by forces. What’s even more surprising is that the greatest threat to the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange.”
