Gearbox and owner THQ Nordic spark more acquisitions

The video game industry has seen a number of major acquisitions over the past year, and it appears the Embracer Group is looking for new studios to buy them. The company currently has developers such as Gearbox Software, Saber Interactive, Deep Silver, and THQ Nordic. In an interview with financial timesCEO Lars Wingfors has stated that he plans to bring more studios under the company’s umbrella, specifically those that already have a solid success rate. Embracer wants to find companies that are well run and allow them to continue to do their best, with minimal oversight.

“From a business point of view, we don’t have central, commercial decision-making,” Wingfors told the Financial Times. “Looking at other companies, they struggled when they put in too many layers of managers and management and started controlling the creators, and that’s when they started falling apart.”

Wingefors’ comments come less than a month after Embracer completed its purchase of Dark Horse Media. After the purchase, Dark Horse CEO Mike Richardson stayed with the company, which appears to confirm Embracer’s approach. Dark Horse is Embracer’s 10th operational group, and has been brought in to enhance the latter company’s Transmedia capabilities. As Embracer brings in more development teams, Wingefors believes it’s putting less pressure on games that need to be big financial hits.

“If you can make one game, you have a high business risk, but if you make 200 games, as we do, the business risk will be lower,” Wingefors said.

The CEO apparently didn’t go into details of Embracer Group’s plans, but did mention that they’re looking more into free games. Embracer is based in Sweden, but the company wants to continue expanding its presence in several other countries, including the US, China, UK, Poland and France. It remains to be seen how things go for the company, but it certainly looks like Embracer is making big plans for expansion!
