NHK “Challenge Chiko” format to be adapted as “Mapi” in Spain

The Japanese comedy format “Chiko Challenge” will be adapted by Japanese studios to broadcast in Spain via public broadcaster TVE. This is the first time that Japanese broadcaster NHK has seen one of its internationally adapted entertainment formats.

The deal includes Dutch distributor Lineup Industries and Spanish production company Mediacreast, which will produce 60 episodes under the local title “Mapi”.

“Chiko Challenge” confronts celebrities with child-like questions that are often surprisingly difficult to answer. Quizmaster is a character named Chiko, who is half CGI, half live actor and particularly picky. False answers are more likely to be ridiculed and cause a tantrum in the test administrator, before the expert reveals the correct answer and makes a playful presentation or experiment.

The show was launched in Japan in 2018 and has already been broadcast to 162 episodes.

The relationship between Lineup and NHK follows an earlier agreement that made NHK adapt Dutch format “Radio Gaga”, originally produced by De Chinezen for VRT, a drama about a hyper-local and intimate radio station, into a successful show now in its third season. The new agreement stipulates that Lineup will help the distribution arm of NHK Enterprises expand its sales.

“The Chiko Challenge is a family quiz show yet totally unique. With the growing demand for light entertainment and the constant move toward shared viewing, this show provides fun and entertainment for the whole family,” said Ed Lowers, founder of the group.

“We are very excited to see Chikou, beloved by viewers of all ages in Japan, travel outside her home country and transform into Mabe in Spain! This is the first NHK entertainment format to be localized overseas,” said Matsumoto Koji, President and CEO of NHK Enterprises. .

Founded in 2018, and based in Barcelona and Madrid, Mediacrest is one of the fastest growing production houses in Spain, with credits in fiction, entertainment and documentaries.
