Pete Alonso, the Mets’ first captain, had New York fans pull their hair after he made two fouls throwing the ball in a Nationals loss.
All it takes is one day to go from hero to goat. Pete Alonso just confirmed on Sunday for the Mets.
A day after hitting him at a Grand Slam, the first baseman and his defensive abilities came under fire for two throws in the eighth inning against Washington.
The first was a questionable decision. The other was a mistake. Both put the Mets in a position to blow up a match advance and loss.
Pete Alonso’s mistake comes at a critical time for Mets
The Nationals scored his first with Lucius Fox setting a goal to bring Dee Strange-Gordon home from third base. Alonso grabbed the ball but his tricky throw home didn’t give Thomas Nido many chances to signal the hostility.
Then two of Alonso’s hitters made a mistake costing him to miss a routine second base throw. A shot at Francisco Lindor was sure to result in a double play and halftime. Instead, the rules were loaded and Washington went on to score two goals in a Nelson Cruz song.
The Mets lost 4-2.
After the match, Alonso stood by his decision to throw the ball into the net and could not figure out why he missed the throw to second place. He took full responsibility for his huge mistakes.
“Dropting this up late is something that smells bad — especially for me,” Alonso said. “When I go out there, I don’t want to let anyone down, especially anyone in the locker room. But after not performing there, the team was disappointed. As a result, we lost the match.”
