Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Go 2 is coming soon, and it’s getting bigger

Last fall, Microsoft updated its best Surface PCs, including the premium tablet, the Surface Pro 8, along with the Surface Laptop Studio, the successor to the Surface Book series. While the Surface Go 3 was also announced, there are a few other members of the group that need the update. One of them is the Surface Laptop Go 2, and according to a report from Windows Centralcoming soon.

First of all, the Surface Laptop Go 2 will largely be a spec bump over the previous generation, and Microsoft is still a generation behind the curve. The original model had 10th generation processors, so this one will get the 11th generation. Again, it will only be offered with a Core i5, most likely Core i5-1135G7.

Configurations remain the same. You can get 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and for storage, your options are 64GB eMMC, 128GB SSD, or 256GB SSD. And again, the base model does not come with a fingerprint sensor.

RAM storage fingerprint scanner price
4GB 64 GB eMMC no $549
8 GB 128 GB SSD yes $699
8 GB 256 GB SSD yes $899

The other thing that will be new is the Sage color, which will likely join existing Platinum, Sandstone and Ice Blue options. Of course, there are no pictures of the new style yet.

While the change is mostly a spec bump, it’s a noticeable change. In the original Surface Laptop Go, I used the Microsoft Core i5-1035G1, which was praised for not only being the Pentium Gold that was in the Surface Go series, but also lower than the Core i5. In fact, there were three different Core i5 options in Intel’s 10th generation ‘Ice Lake’ family, and they all had different levels of graphics power.

This is not the case with the eleventh generation of “Tiger Lake”. The Surface Laptop Go family is about to skip the Iris Plus graphics that come with premium Ice Lake chips, from Intel UHD Graphics to Iris Xe. In fact, the Surface Laptop Go 2 will be significantly more powerful, considering it’s one of Microsoft’s entry-level laptops.

As for when it will arrive, the answer is soon. The report says it’s likely to ship in June, which loosely aligns with Microsoft’s usual spring launch schedule. Sadly, it looks like we won’t see an update to the regular Surface Laptop until later this year.
