Moon Knight Episode 3 Review: Wrath of the Gods

moon knight Episode 3 “The Friendly Type” marks the midway point in Marvel’s new “series of events” and it’s definitely an extended episode, to say the least. (Warning: SPOILERS CONTINUE!!!) At the end of moon knight Episode 2 Mark Spector (Oscar Isaac) wrestles with control of his physical body away from Stephen Grant, and follows Koncho’s direction to intercept villain Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) in Egypt, before he can locate the tomb of the goddess Amit. However, this mission deviates in more ways than one…

Serious personal issues

Mark Spector’s mission to find Harrow in Egypt is immediately complicated by the fact that the biggest obstacle to his realization is… himself. Just as Mark happens to some Harrow’s goons on the roof of an Egyptian house, Stephen steps in with some pacifist ideals that literally take Mark out of the fight. However, things get a lot weirder from there: Both Stephen and Mark lose consciousness, only to find themselves clutching a bloodstained knife standing over the corpses of thugs.

After some quick things in the mirror, it’s proven that no matter who did the bloody act against these thugs, it wasn’t Mark or Stephen.

moon knight Episode 3 is our clearest teaser yet of another Mark Spector character. At this point, fans almost unanimously agree that it will be “Jake Lockley,” the detective/spy pseudonym for Mark Spector. In the comics, Lockley is a rude, street smart guy who creates an entire spy network of informants at street level. MCU Lockely looks like a Bond/Bourne hybrid and is kind to the ladies (see: Episode 1) because he is brutal to his enemies (see: Episode 3).

Godchilla

One of the largest groups moon knight Episode 3 is the encounter of the Egyptian deities, through their human avatars, inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. In order to achieve this meeting, Khuncho makes the risky move of causing a sudden eclipse of the sun to attract the attention of the gods. It succeeds, and during the resulting meeting Mark meets new potential allies (Yitzel, the avatar of Hathor), but ultimately fails to champion the case that Harrow and Amit are a serious threat to the world. Harrow is left to his own devices, while Koncho is slapped in the wrist and threatens imprisonment if he again messes with the laws of nature.

Meet the midnight man

moon knight Episode 3 introduces a new character to the MCU: Anton Mogart, played by the late French actor Gaspard Ulliel. Lily brought Mark to Anton’s house to examine a sarcophagus in his collection that might contain the site of Amit’s grave. Unfortunately, Stephen and Mark’s lack of cooperation with each other exacerbates matters – as does Harrow’s timely arrival. Anton ends up turning on Layla and Mark after being seduced by Harrow’s offer of Amit’s divine power. Fortunately, Stephen gives Mark’s driver’s seat and Moon Knight can fight off the thugs of Anton and Harrow and help him and Layla escape.

Draw your own stars

Evidence that Stephen finds in Medjay’s tomb is a star chart – only one that was drawn two thousand years ago, when the stars were in a completely different position. In order to return these terms, Khonshu has Stephen/Mr. Knight helped him restore the night sky to the way it was long ago. The ruse allows Mark and Layla to locate Amit’s grave, but it costs Mark his powers: the other gods succeed in threatening her and imprisoning Khuncho in stone.
