PlayStation has released a new system software update for the PlayStation 5, Version: 22.01-05.02.00. Compared to the PS5 system software update in late March, this latest update appears to be relatively simple “improving system performance” and nothing else. Additionally, while it was previously noted that a PS5 system software update in 2022 will add a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), it does not appear to have been included in that specific system software update.
Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Experience, stated, “We are also pleased to share that the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is scheduled to be released on PS5 in the coming months.” in late March. “On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and computer monitors, VRR dynamically synchronizes the screen refresh rate with the PS5 console’s graphic output. This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by reducing or eliminating visual effects, such as frame speed issues and screen tearing. The gameplay in Many PS5 games are smoother as scenes are rendered instantly, graphics look sharper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR with a game patch and future games may include support for VRR at launch.”
While PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus had problems after previous system software updates for the PS5 and PS4, it seems unlikely that the record will repeat itself today given the relatively minor update. As mentioned above, the new PlayStation 5 system software update version 22.01-05.02.00 is now available and will likely install automatically at night for most people. The PlayStation 5 itself is now available with the drive-in version for $499 while the all-digital console costs $399, assuming you can find either one in stock.
