Rotterdam Festival reveals dates for 2023, plans to cut 15% staff

After becoming a virtual world for two consecutive years due to the pandemic, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) plans to reduce its core cast by 15%.

The new team, to be announced in May during the Cannes Film Festival, will work across five divisions, Content, Communication and Audience Reach, Finance and Business Growth, and Business Affairs and Operations.

Once again led by Festival Director Vanja Kaludjersek and Managing Director Marjan van der Haar, Rotterdam is also aiming to return as a physical event for its 52nd edition which will take place on January 25 and February 5, 2023.

Kaludjersic said the festival has “deep respect for its team, which in the past two years has been able to engage audiences and support filmmakers in new and innovative ways.”

The CEO added that the festival’s ultimate goal is to “create a pioneering cultural platform accessible to all those who champion cinema and audiovisual arts”.

Van der Haar said the Rotterdam festival was “financially affected” by the “curtailment of business”. She added that “changes in both public behavior and the industrial landscape” were the driving forces behind this willingness to reorganize.

This year’s online festival scored 177,267 online admissions and gathered over 1,562 film professionals present online. The selection features 220 features from over 60 countries. Paraguayan director Paz Encina’s “Eami” won the first Tiger Award and a €40,000 cash prize at the Dutch event.
