Winding and winding in some interesting ways, DC’s Infinite Frontier tells a story that wasn’t afraid to dive into the more defined levels of the DC canon. The vast majority of the problem follows Thomas Wayne/Batman as he realizes his Earth hasn’t changed, despite Barry Allen helping Earth-1 reverse time travel hoaxes during the Flashpoint events. Thomas is disappointed and desperate about this fact, especially because it means his son, Bruce Wayne, is still dead. After a series of recent attempts by Thomas to change things backwards and understand the “divine continuity” that shapes time and space, the case presents two conclusions – the second showing Bruce Wayne researching the same things as Thomas. Bruce can be seen speaking to a character who warns that his and Thomas’ efforts could threaten “all space and time”. On the last page of the release we see who the character is – Corky Baxter, who sits on top of the Batmobile and warns that the Rip Hunter and the Time Masters will have to deal with the chaos that Bruce will bring.
Originally created by Jack Miller and Robin Moreira in 1959 an offer #20 Corky is a young boy who is the younger brother of Bonnie Baxter, a member of the Time Masters. Corky often caused trouble for the other Rip and Time Masters, including one case where he traveled back into prehistoric times alone and was killed by dinosaurs. This incident made it difficult for Corky to time travel with the team, and he eventually committed suicide because of it. In the years since, his appearance in IDC Comic has been essentially nonexistent, outside of a few brief appearances, from continuing appearances in the 2000s. With that in mind, the idea of bringing Corky back to DC lore — with Bonnie, Rip, and the rest of the Time Masters apparently coming back — is certainly intriguing. In general, the original list of Time Masters was played in the period beforeflash point Stories, as Rip Hunter later forms a superhero-filled version of the team after the events of final crisis. While Rip himself has been immersed in DC continuity (and DC television) and beyond in recent years, the idea that he could bring his original band back together, and that they could have strong enough repercussions to stop everything Thomas and Bruce do toward “divine continuity” is exciting. Certainly interesting.
