The most popular Taco Bell item ever is back

Rejoice! One of Taco Bell’s most popular items is back to its forever menu this time around. On Monday, the beloved taco chain announced that Mexican pizza will soon be returning to menus across the country. The item was previously removed from menus in 2020 after 30 years of history at the restaurant and is now back in a matter of weeks. According to Taco Bell, you’ll be able to get Mexican pizza nationwide starting May 19.

“Our list is full of fan favorites, but Mexican pizza is at the top of that list,” Taco Bell CEO Mark King said in a press release. From its flashy introduction to menus in 1985 as ‘Pizza Pizza’ to the inspiration behind the creation of Disreputable jingles, Mexican pizza has a long history with the brand and I’m glad we can give fans what they crave and bring classic Mexican pizza back home where it belongs.”

Immediately after its removal, Taco Bell artist Krrish Jagerdar launched a petition to try to persuade the chain to return the item. Taco Bell’s petition is a good indication of why she decided to bring back Mexican pizza. As of this writing, Jagirdar’s petition has more than 170,000 signatures.

“Like many American Indians who grew up vegetarian, we had limited access to ‘fun’ fast food, so Taco Bell became a bridge of belonging to American culture for many kids like me who grew up in immigrant families,” the petitioner added in the release. “This made it particularly devastating when Mexican pizza was pulled off the menus in 2020, but quickly two years later I found myself on a conference call with the Taco Bell team where they shared news of the return of Mexican pizza, which clearly shows that listening to their fans is part no. It is embedded in their DNA. It is one of the many reasons why Taco Bell is more than just another fast food restaurant.”

Taco Bell Rewards members will be able to redeem the item beginning May 17 through the Taco Bell app for in-store and in-car orders. The item will then be released across the country and at locations in Aruba, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

The Mexican pizza—now also in a vegan option—will be available to order for $4.49 or as part of a set with two crunchy tacos and a large fountain drink for $8.99. These prices depend on the location.
