Thor: Love and Thunder reveals Natalie Portman as Thor

After an extended hiatus from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natalie Portman is back stronger than ever in the first teaser for “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

The fourth film in the “Thor” series is directed by Taika Waititi, who directed the critically acclaimed “Thor: Ragnarok”. The movie comes on the heels of ‘Avengers Endgame’ that ended with Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth), who got lost after the fall of his kingdom Asgard, leaving Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The film will begin with him as a member of the ensemble, and the actors who portray The Guardian — Chris Pratt, Pom Klementiev, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper — will reprise their roles. Former MCU actors Tessa Thompson, Jimmy Alexander, Sean Jean, Jeff Goldblum and Waititi himself – like rock-korg wrestlers – will also return for the film.

“Love and Thunder” is based on the critically acclaimed Jason Aaron play in the comic book “The Mighty Thor,” which saw Jane Foster (played by Portman in the films), being the subject of Thor Odinson’s love interest, Thor’s mantle after the Hammer Holy Mjolnir considered Odinson unworthy and stripped him of his powers. Foster’s newfound power comes at a huge cost: Every time you use the hammer, breast cancer gets worse and worse.

Portman reprises the role of Jane after she last appeared in an MCU movie in 2013 called “Thor: the Dark World.” Portman reportedly left the series due to his dissatisfaction with the film, especially replacing original director Patty Jenkins with Alan Taylor. However, Waititi reportedly directly persuaded Portman to return to the MCU for the project.

In addition to the old faces, “Love and Thunder” will introduce new members to the series. Christian Bale portrays main villain Gorr the God Butcher, a more recent addition to the Marvel canon, created by Aaron and Esad Ribic in 2013. Russell Crowe will also appear in the film, and Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone are also expected to make cameo appearances. Jenny Morris and Simon Russell Bell were also cast in unannounced roles for the film.

Waititi wrote the script for the film with Jennifer Kaiten Robinson. The film was produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum. Produced by Marvel Studios. The film was shot in Sydney, Australia last year, after being repeatedly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thor: Love and Thunder will premiere in theaters on July 8. Watch the full trailer below.
