A completely new take on the character formerly Wayne Manor and Pat’s Cave on the outskirts of town, this version’s roots come from an urban legend about New York City. Revealed in a recent post batman artProduction designer James Chinlund explains:
“If Wayne [family] Built this tower in the 1920s, what would be the bottom of this tower that would provide an opportunity to cave? There is a subway station in Waldorf Astoria in New York, the legend is that there is a train parked there all the time, the idea is that when the president is in town, if there is ever an emergency and he has to get out of town, they can take him through this secret tunnel in Waldorf And take it out of the city discreetly. I’ve always liked this idea and thought it was very romantic, so I thought of the idea that if you were a Wayne family and you set up this town, you’d probably have your own secret train station under the tower.”
Director Matt Reeves also opened up about his son’s sense of Wayne Tower’s design in the film and its basis in being something built by Bruce’s old Malian ancestors, admiring him as “a place where a Rockefeller or Vanderbilt would have lived.” “The Wayne Tower, in the movies, is usually the mall for Wayne Enterprises,” Reeves said in the book. “But we wanted to take this Gothic tower and turn it into Bruce’s house. It would be an old skyscraper, long after its glory days as you might see at the base of Central Park or some of the big old buildings in Chicago.”
Another inspiration for him and Wayne Tower’s appearance, Reeves added, was the Maisel brothers’ documentary, Gray Gardens, a 1975 film about a mother and daughter living in an abandoned New York mansion. He added, “The idea of showing decadence so you can see what was once but isn’t anymore — that sense of the beauty of decadence, and how that reflected Bruce’s character, was key. He doesn’t care about any traditional family history anymore. He’s interested in his obsessive mission. , it’s like drugs to him – he’s addicted to being Batman. So when you look closely inside Wayne Manor, someone seems to just let it all fall apart.”
