Batman He is currently entertaining fans both in theaters and on HBO Max, as he presents an amazing new show on DC Comics legends. Among the film’s cast is Selina Kyle / Catwoman, played by actress Zoe Kravitz. While Kravitz’s portrayal has definitely caught on, with fans even hoping she’ll land her own role, the actress seems to have a unique reaction to the significance of the role. In the recently released book batman artKravitz spoke about the response she’s received from being the character, as well as the “pressure” she felt in succeeding Catwoman’s former actresses.
“When I got that part, I felt good, and then when the news came out, I’ve never had a lot of phone calls and texts to this day, not even on my birthday,” Kravitz recalls. “That was when it hit me—that’s not a big deal to me, that’s just a big deal. Legacy Kate and Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, everyone. It’s such an honor to be in that group of people.”
“There were times when I really had to walk away from that, because I think the pressure to be creative, or to compare myself to those other great actresses, I think is really dangerous,” Kravitz continued. “Because this story is so specific, I really wanted it to feel driven by the character, and I wanted it to feel like it was coming from the inside, something inside, not something outside. It’s, in a way, about how she looks and moves — but it’s really about her spirit, and that was What am I really?
He wanted to focus on it. I didn’t want to get caught up in trying to make something creative or exciting. I really wanted it to be a story about a woman who survived life’s hell trying to figure out what to do next.”
Kravitz also spoke about the way Selena explores the “gray zone” of being a superhero or super-villain, as well as the “turbulent past” that Selena comes from.
“I wouldn’t call Selena a villain,” Kravitz offered, but I think even some of the other villains in the story, they all have really valid and interesting points, and I think that’s the cool thing in this world. Explore the gray area.
“What was really important to me was that Selena didn’t come out as a victim, because she comes from a really turbulent past, and I think there can be a little bit of a trap with the female characters who come from a troubled past, or retaliate in some way where they feel like a victim,” he said. Kravitz. “I really found a character who was more of a mate or more of a good looking girl in tight clothes. This is a real person who struggled a lot, and I admire her and feel for her.”
