David M. Jones Dead: Visual Effects Artist in Star Wars Cannes 74

David M. passed away.

Jones’ death has been confirmed to diverse by his ex-wife and girlfriend Janice Gerson-Jones.

Jones has been a longtime visual effects artist whose career spanned nearly 30 years. He was born in Sacramento, California, but his childhood took him to Air Force bases as far afield as Anchorage, Alaska and Friborg, Illinois, where he fondly remembered buying his first first-class aircraft model. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from California State Long Beach. After graduation, he started working in the film industry as a model maker, then was promoted to model shop supervisor and ended his career as a visual effects supervisor. David has worked at ILM, Universal Hartland, and Boss Film Studios for the greater part of his career.

His contribution to the field of visual effects can be seen in such works as “Space Academy” (1977), “Star Wars” (1977), “Close Encounters” (1977), “Buck Rogers” (1979), “Battlestar Galactica” (1979) and Air Force One (1997). Jones also worked on the 1992 movie “Alien” as an influential art director.

In addition to films, Jones has worked in commercials including Budweiser Bud Bowl Super Bowl commercials in 1989 and 1990. He also contributed to the Choose Your Tomorrow for Horizons theme park ride at Disney World’s Epcot Center.

Aside from visual effects, Jones has spent time as an artist, illustrator, supervisor, repairer, creator, and model maker.

Jones is survived by his son Hunter and ex-wife Janis Gerson Jones.
