Chinese box office: Weekend revenue drops to lowest level of the year

The box office in mainland China over the weekend was the lowest this year as thousands of movie theaters remained closed due to the spread of the emerging Corona virus.

Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway showed that movie revenues nationwide between Friday and Sunday fell to just $8.2 million. That compares with $10.5 the previous weekend.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” was once again the highest-grossing title, reaching $1.7 million (11.0 million CNY), bringing its total to $17.3 million (RMB111) since its release on April 8, 2022. Indian thriller “Dreesham” took fifth place with a second weekend score of 3.7 million yuan ($600,000). After 10 days in Chinese cinemas, she raised $1.6 million (10.2 million CNY).

Cinemas across the country are closed or under closure. Shanghai, China’s largest city, remains the hardest hit by the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus. On Monday, authorities announced that Shanghai had recorded more than 16,000 new asymptomatic cases, 2,472 more asymptomatic cases and 51 deaths related to the coronavirus.
