Nintendo and Illumination Officially Delay Super Mario Movie

Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment announced that Super Mario The movie has been officially postponed. The film was originally scheduled to be released in December, but has now been pushed back to April 2023. The film will release on April 7 in North America and on April 28 in Japan. News of the delay surfaced on the official Nintendo Twitter account on Monday evening, in a tweet From Shigeru Miyamoto. The Mario and Zelda creator didn’t provide details about the delay, but he promised fans that the end result would be worth the extra time it takes to finish the movie.

“After consulting with Chris San, my partner in Illumination about Super Mario Bros., we have decided to move the global release to Spring 2023 – April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise you that,” Miyamoto wrote on Twitter.

We hope the extra time will help ensure that the final product meets Nintendo’s standards! Released in theaters in 1993, the live action movie Mario was a critical and commercial failure. Since then, Nintendo has been remarkably reluctant to agree to other Hollywood tweaks to its features. However, this new Mario movie could open the door to other Nintendo movies, if it proves successful. Sure, the movie’s All-Star voice cast could lead to spin-offs, but there may be some waiting, now that the movie has been delayed.

The cast for the Super Mario movie was revealed during a Nintendo Direct show in September 2021. The film will feature Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan Michael Key as Todd, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamik, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. In addition to these actors, Mario’s voice actor Charles Martinet will appear in the film.
