Willy Wonka is in the candy business, and Warner Bros. took a cue from the candy maker at their 2022 CinemaCon presentation — showing a trailer for Timothée Chalamet’s new movie about 20 months after its official release.
The annual Conference of Cinema Owners took a nearly two-minute look at the preface to the novel – which imagines the main character in Roald Dahl’s classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” as a young man looking to build his empire.
Although iconicly depicted as a quirky (bordered skew) pole by Jane Wilder, Chalamet makes its own claim to the iconic brown velvet top worn by Wonka. Busted with chocolate truffles on the street as cops and clergy seemingly try to drive him out of town, Chalamet is serious and charming on his mission to spread joy (and possibly transition into retail dominance).
Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins and others all appear around a number of songs and dances led by Chalamet – who dances masterfully on a coffee shop tabletop and leads a chorus of dancers holding umbrellas as they speak in his style. Character name.
There’s even an appearance through the Golden Ticket – written on it is a note from Wonka’s mother, reminding him that the best part of eating sweets is sharing them with the ones you love. In the trailer’s final moments, there are a few poem theatrical bars, featuring Chalamet’s sweet voice singing around an “invisible thread” that connects us all.
The only sour note from the CinemaCon floor? Fans will have to wait until Christmas 2023 to see “Wonka”.
