WWE released their NXT roster 10 people today, and now a new report looks to clear some realizations and introduce additional context. For those unaware, WWE released stars Dakota Kai, Malcolm Bivens, Raylene Devine, Draco Anthony, Milla Malani, Persia Perotta, Harland, Dexter Loomis, Santana George, and Paige Principale earlier today, and according to combat choice John Laurentis was the one who made the cuts and said the budget cuts were to blame.
The report says that an internal email stated that “due to budget cuts, with immediate effect as of today, 4/29/2020, we have reached terms to issue the following,” and that all of the stars released today have 30 non-competitive clauses in their contracts, which were Traditionally a standard for NXT Superstars.
According to the report, Bivens did not plan to re-sign last year after not appearing on TV for two years, but then the stadium was set up for the Diamond Mine faction. WWE then offered a new deal in February, but Bivens made it clear that he would not sign again. As for Dakota Kay, the report says she saw her release, and she also made it clear to WWE that she has no plans to renew her contract.
Harland is one of the biggest surprises on this list since he entered NXT with a lot of hype and hype. It was used on TV but didn’t get into the ring very often and was only used as an outlet for Joe Gacy. The report says coaches and officials said they felt he had not progressed enough in the ring to their liking.
An NXT official expressed frustration that so many current storylines and angles were affected by these releases, and they had little notice to prepare for the track change. Pirotta and Lumis shared a storyline with Indi Hartwell and Duke Hudson, and Lumis and Hartwell’s marriage story was one of the biggest NXT marriage storylines last year. Meanwhile, Harland was expected to play a role in Gacy’s upcoming match against Bron Breakker, but that’s out the door, too.
Diamond Mine is still losing people to releases, as the stable was cut in half last time. Now she loses her manager, and while they recovered last time, it would be very difficult to replace someone like the Bivens.
