More great movies and shows are leaving Netflix at the end of May. While many of the best Netflix movies and best Netflix shows remain, and more are joining the ranks of what’s new on Netflix, these titles are the ones you should make time to watch before they are gone.
Netflix is constantly adding and subtracting items, although movies tend to run through more than shows. We’re not sure if any of these departures will prompt you to cancel Netflix, but their absence will certainly be disappointing to some. Just like Schitt’s Creek is leaving Netflix.
With our recommendations, you’ll stand a better chance of getting the most out of your Netflix subscription this month. The Checkout Movies list has something for everyone, whether you’re in the mood for an exciting movie or just feeling the need for speed. A fan-favourite comedy series and a long-running drama are on their way out, so make time to have fun.
Here’s what to watch before they leave Netflix in May 2022. Plus, check out our guide on new movies and shows to watch this weekend.
The best Netflix movies and shows out in May 2022
Downton Abbey: Series 1-6
Departure May 31
The lousy period drama has captivated viewers on both sides of the pond (and around the world) with the romance, intrigue, scandal, and adventure that takes place up and down the English estate of Downton Abbey. Over the course of six seasons, the show followed the Earl of Grantham, the aristocratic Crowley family and their servants through marriages, births, deaths, and wit by the wonderful widow Countess (Maggie Smith).
Now, the characters have taken to the big screen, with a second movie, Downton Abbey: A New Era, set in theaters this month. This makes this the perfect time to enjoy the series.

Happy Endings: Seasons 1-3
Departure May 31
In the years since Friends ended, a number of comedy bands have risen up in an attempt to fill their famous shoes. Some, like How I Met Your Mother, were successful, while others weren’t funny or only lasted for a few episodes. The happy endings landed somewhere in the middle. It was funny and ran for three seasons on ABC, yet it didn’t receive much recognition. It seemed like time on Netflix would change that, but now the comedy is leaving for anonymous streaming parts.
“Happy Endings” centers around six friends in their twenties who live in Chicago. When Ditzy Alex (Elisa Cuthbert) leaves ambitious restaurateur Dave (Zachary Knighton) at the altar, the rest of the group try not to let the event affect their friendships. They include Alex’s nervous sister Jane (Elisa Coupe) and her husband Brad (Damon Wayans Jr), as well as slacker Max (Adam Paley) and serial killer Penny (Casey Wilson).

Departure May 31
If you’re feeling the need for speed, hurry up and catch the 1986 Tom Cruise classic before it leaves Netflix and before the sequel Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters May 27.
We probably don’t need to sum up the movie for you, but here it goes: Cruz plays provocative fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is sent to an elite Naval Aviation Academy for advanced training. There, he ruffles the Feathers, and competes against a snowman (Val Kilmer) for top honors and a romance with his coach (Kelly McGillis). But after a devastating tragedy, Maverick must regain his nerve to make a tense international engagement.

Departure May 31
Few things are as exciting and intimate as an underdog sports movie. The Blind Side tells the true story of Michael O’Hare, who overcame childhood poverty to play in the NFL. He did so with the help of adoptive parents Sean and Lee Ann Toohy, and the story is chronicled in a book by Michael Lewis.
The Blind Side is a pretty standard inspiring crying game, but it earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination and a win for portraying the feisty Sandra Bullock of Leigh Anne. Watching the 2009 movie on Netflix didn’t last long; It just arrived on April 1st and is heading to the finish zone on May 31st.

Departure May 31
The ’90s were the heyday for action thrillers like Wild Things, but they don’t make much of it anymore. It’s too bad, because the current movie scene is really missing out on “trivial but good” movies. Just look at this stunning endorsement from the late Roger Ebert: “Like a three-way crash between a fluffy sex movie, TV series, and B-grade noir. I loved it.”
So, get your dose of spirited entertainment. Wild Things begins with high school guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) accused of rape by two students, the wealthy and popular Kelly Van Ryan (Dennis Richards) and poor outcast Susie Tuller (Nev Campbell). When police detective Ray Duckett (Kevin) suspects the trio of fraud, his investigation leads to twists and turns no one expected.
