early life
Watts was born on June 28, 1981 in Fountain, Colorado. He attended Fountain-Fort Carson High School before attending New York University, where he studied cinema.
Professional life
After completing his degree, Watts began his early directing career in commercials, and began directing commercials for production company Park Pictures. He then got into short films by directing Clay Pride: Being Clay in America, a clay film that is a satirical piece about several LGBT issues, such as appearing as Clay. He continued working on short films throughout the following decade and also began directing music videos for artists such as Fatboy Slim, Death Cab for Cutie, Relient K, and TV on the Radio, among others.
In 2011, he started with Onion News Network, the satirical news organization, directed 10 episodes of their TV news show and also served as co-executive producer. In 2012, he directed and produced the TV movie “Eugene!”
Watts’ directorial debut was in 2014 when he directed “The Clown”. Watts had originally made a fake trailer for a movie about a father who turns into a clown after trying on a costume he found in his basement. The trailer, which he created with his friend Christopher Ford, was uploaded to YouTube, where it was widely viewed. Producer and director Eli Roth watched the trailer and got close to Watts about turning the idea into a feature released in 2014.
The following year, in 2015, Watts made his next movie “Cop Car”. The film tells the story of two kids who steal a police car and are followed by its owner, played by Kevin Bacon. Watts came up with the idea for the movie in a dream he had as a child.

In 2017, Watts landed a huge project when he directed “Spider-Man: Homecoming”. He was so determined to direct the project that he sent a fake trailer to Marvel executives in order to compete for the role of director. The film was a success and Watts directed its sequel, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in 2019. He then completed the film trilogy in 2021 when he directed the third film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Throughout his work in films, he became a devoted fan of the story himself, and even began to collect rare spiders.
Outside of the Spider-Man films, Watts has also worked on other projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He directed the mid-credits scene for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, linking to “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which was released in October 2021. The scene was filmed during the filming of No Home. He is also scheduled to direct the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He also directed mid-credit and post-credit scenes for the 2022 Marvel movie “Moribius”.
Watts has also worked on projects outside of Marvel. He worked with actors George Clooney and Brad Pitt on a thriller that he wrote and directed. He also worked with his wife as a co-producer on the sixth installment of the Final Destination film series.
