Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Explains Their Trick To Make Good Villains

Creator series behind Jujutsu Kisen They explained their trick to create some good villains in the manga! Gege Akutami’s original manga series has exploded into a whole new world of recognition and popularity for both the manga and anime versions in the past few years, and it’s hard to deny why. Fans have been drawn to the way the Weekly Shonen Jump series eschews many traditional manga formulas, but will stick to specific elements of those formulas to craft its own story genre. This was especially true for how the series approaches its dynamic between the main hero and the antagonist as well.

In an exclusive interview in the latest issue of Jump GIGA magazine (As spotted and translated by @soukatsu_ on Twitter) Jujutsu series creator Kaisen Gege Akutami was asked how the series contained so compelling enemies despite their evil intentions, and his openness about his approach to crafting these villains. As it turns out, Akutami’s trick for crafting villains isn’t necessarily to make them attract them with empathy, but to give them clear goals that cause them to clash with the heroes in certain ways.

“There is no real need to make them sympathetic. [characters]Akutami began,[So] I think it is necessary to clearly show why the opponent clashes with the convictions of the main character, and establish this as the axis on which they act. It is easy to give reasons behind irrational actions, but it is very difficult to translate them into principles that the characters work on. As a given example of this idea is Choso, who initially started out as a way to bleed Yuji Itadori after taking the brothers, but soon ends up becoming Yuji’s ally thanks to their sudden connection found during their initial encounter.

The series had plenty of opponents especially with the current Culling game arc, and while Kenjaku is definitely the overall standout as the main plotter, there were many smaller foes with their own attractive characteristics. At the same time, all of them were pursuing their goals with great enthusiasm and that made everyone explode so far. Then there are bigger threats like Sukuna, who haven’t made the move yet.
