While the Kardashian family was at the Met Gala, a jury reached a verdict in a $100 million Blac Chyna defamation case against the famous family — and they won.
Kardashian came out victorious without any compensation to Chyna. The jury found that none of the Kardashians slandered Chyna and none of them interfered with E! bypass, AP reports. Chyna claimed that the famous family persuaded the network to cancel her reality show “Rob & Chyna”, which she co-starred with Rob Kardashian.
Chyna — model and influencer, ex-fiancé of Rob Kardashian and mother of 5-year-old daughter Dream — has sued the Kardashian family, claiming it ruined her reality TV career.
“Rob & Chyna” aired for one season on E! In 2016. The show was at the center of Chyna’s lawsuit, which alleged that the series was canceled after its first season because the Kardashian family falsely told producers and network executives that Chyna violently attacked Rob Kardashian in December 2016. During the trial, the Kardashians and E! Executives said that while filming may be continuing, the show wasn’t technically lit for a second season, so there was no reason to cancel it.
On the one hand, Chyna claimed that Kris Jenner was the leader of the masterplan in which the Kardashian-Jenners used their power to force E! to separate the series. But on the other hand, the family and famous CEOs behind E! The series said the show ended because the couple broke up, which was the whole premise that was initially green-lit – basically, “Rob & Chyna” couldn’t go on without Rob and Chyna.
With deliberations that lasted two days, the jury found that “Kardashian often acted in bad faith on the issues raised in the case,” according to AP“But that had no substantive effect on Chyna’s contract or the fate of the show.”
Text messages and emails were featured as evidence throughout the trial, which depicts Kardashian speaking negatively about Chyna and telling E! That they might stop filming their lead single, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” if Chyna was involved. One text from Khloé Kardashian read: “We’re even considering not going ahead with our show if their show goes on, and we feel very badly that this hurts our family.” However, when Kris Jenner testified, she said she did not have the ability to “impress” the network upon any cancellation.
Throughout the 10-day trial, the Kardashian-Jenners sat front row in Los Angeles Superior Court most days. The trial was relatively low-key and generated only a moderate level of interest, compared to other legal media spectacles — especially given the paparazzi magnet who are the defendants, Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, who have all testified. The trial also brought producers and executives in the reality TV space to the platform, including virtual testimony from Ryan Seacrest, who produced the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” franchise. Even Pete Davidson appeared in court one day to support his girlfriend Kim.
The case revolves around Chyna’s 2017 lawsuit, alleging that Rob Kardashian was abusive and that the Kardashian-Jenners were responsible for the ex-couple’s short show cancellation. Chyna has sued the entire family over allegations of defamation, assault, battery, domestic violence, and interference with potential economic relationships. That same year, the family responded to the allegations with their own lawsuit, claiming that Chyna was the one who attacked Rob Kardashian.
Last week, Rob Kardashian took the stage to testify about the alleged abuse he suffered from his ex-fiancée. A volatile fight emerged in December 2016 as the main event leading to the end of “Rob & Chyna”, in which Chyna allegedly strangled Rob with a phone cord, put a gun to his head and struck him with a metal pole. ““She strangled me, put a gun to my head twice, and was on cocaine and alcohol,” Rob said in court. When Chyna testified, she told the jury it was just “ridiculous” and that carrying the gun was a “joke.”
During the trial, the Kardashian family filed to dismiss all of Chyna’s claims with the family’s attorney, Michael J. Rhodes, saying her claims “were absurd because there was no documented evidence, economic analysis or expert testimony to support them.” The judge dismissed one of Chyna’s allegations against Kim Kardashian for defamation, ruling that Chyna’s attorney, Lynne Ciani, made no statement during the trial that would prove that Kim Kardashian was defamation of Chyna. But nonetheless, other claims remained for the jury to deliberate on, including the claims of Interfering with a contract against Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, as well as defamation lawsuits against the last three stars.
