HBO has released the trailer and poster for its upcoming original two-part documentary, George Carlin’s American Dream. The documentary was directed by Judd Apatow (HBO’s The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling) and Michael Bonfiglio (HBO’s May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers). It will premiere on HBO on consecutive nights, with the first part showing on Friday, May 20 from 8:00-9:55 PM ET and the next two on Saturday, May 21 at the same time. Both episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max (one of many new releases on the platform in May) beginning Friday, May 20. Here is the official summary of George Carlin’s American Dream, provided by HBO:

“George Carlin’s American Dream chronicles the life and work of legendary comedian George Carlin. Nicknamed “the dean of comedians for the counterculture,” Carlin’s career spanned half a century, presiding over 14 comedy specials on HBO and appearing on The Tonight Show more than 130 times, evolving with the times. It remains a sharp resonance until his death in 2008. Carlin’s ability to focus eerily on societal ills has proven that his work is eerily predictive and that much of his work resonates today with disturbing clarity—and still terrifying. The documentary examines the cultural aspects of the chameleon that are remembered. as one of the most influential stand-up comedies of all time.”

The documentary will showcase Carlin’s rise to fame, beginning with an “intimate window into his personal life,” including his childhood growing up in New York City, the impact of his struggle with drugs on his health, his conflict with the law, and his loving relationship with Brenda, who was his wife of 36 years. And his second marriage to Sally Wade. The documentary includes interviews with Carlin and Brenda’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, who provide insight into her family’s story and her parents’ love and partnership.

The documentary also includes never-before-seen archival material, including archive films, photos, audio recordings, letters, memoirs, and interviews with Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Stephen Colbert, Bill Burr, Bette Midler, W. Kamau Bell, Sam Jay, Judy Gould, Jon Stewart, and others. They are joined by Carlin’s daughter Kelly Carlin, manager Jerry Hamza, second wife Sally Wade, his brother, the late Patrick Carlin, and others.
