Had HBO and legendary comedian George Carlin been partners from the start, he might not have had to deal with all the censorship issues that drove his career up, thanks in part to his amazing “Seven Dirty Words” routine. By the time he hit the cable network in 1978, it was clear it was a match made in stand-up comedy heaven, and his legacy of 14 was pretty cool on its own. So it’s totally fitting that Judd Apatow’s retro-documentary is in two parts George Carlin’s American Dream It will premiere on HBO a month before the 14th anniversary of his death, and the first trailer (shown above) is an instant reminder of his mastery with a microphone.
George Carlin’s American Dream Its first installment will premiere Friday, May 20, with Part Two airing the following night, giving comedy fans a weekend filled with adorable wordplay, commonsense arguments, and exposing nonsense from someone he called their best. Supposedly along with a hippie weather report or two along the way. And it wouldn’t just be a reread for all the gigantic fans who might already be aware – not that there would be anything to complain about if that were the case – as things will likely veer a little more emotionally from the on-stage highlight reel. So whether I laugh so hard I cry, or cry so hard that I laugh, I accept all consequences.
The new HBO documentary is packed with never-before-seen footage of all kinds. Perhaps most noteworthy are the archival footage that must be seen, read and heard. The creative team has been given access to previously stored movies, photos, messages, diaries and audio recordings from George Carlin’s life. Being a stand-up comedian for 52 years, as well as a best-selling author who has been involved in television and other creative projects, the man undoubtedly had a mountain of written material. I hope to see some unused jokes, because anything that landed on Carlin’s cutting room floor would be the best joke in most other comedians’ work.
Beyond that, as shown in the trailer, George Carlin’s American Dream It will also feature a wide range of distinguished stand-up comedians who share stories about working with Carlin and/or how it affected and inspired their lives and careers. This interview topic group includes Chris Rock (who will likely have a full conversation with Carlin about this year Oscars FUBAR Awards Thanks to Will Smith), Jerry Seinfeld, Bette Midler, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Bill Burr, Stephen Wright, W. Kamau Bell, Judy Gould, and more.
From George Carlin’s personal life, the documentary will feature the memories shared by his daughter Kelly Carlin, second wife Sally Wade, late brother Patrick Carlin, manager Jerry Hamza and more. While comedians can speak clearly to certain parts of Carlin’s career, the family interviews will provide further insight into George’s childhood years, his drug-addict struggles, his encounters with the police and other authority figures, and other elements that fueled much of his timeless comedy.
George Carlin’s American Dream It is the spirited work of its famous directors, Judd Apatow, who The Zen Diaries of Gary Chandling Hit all the right notes for fans That late comedianand Michael Bonfiglio, who led the first season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman And 2021 TV Documentary Patrice O’Neill: Killing is easy. They know their way around well-designed documents and respect, and the fact that everyone involved knows enough to make this thing big enough to spread across two nights tells me it’s in the right hands.
We hope this document was surprising enough to disappoint anyone in Hollywood who might want to portray Carlin’s life in a biopic. Unless it can be used Bill and Ted face the musicTechnology that would somehow allow 3D version of Carlin To play himself in this kind of project, I don’t want to. And maybe I don’t want the hologram version either, but I insist on that hypothetical trailer before I commit to any final opinions. Can we have at least George Carlin Show Somewhere streaming?
