early life
Kimbo Slice Kevin Ferguson was born on February 8, 1974 in Nassau, Bahamas. He moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Cutler Ridge, Florida. His mother, Rosemary Clark, raised him and his siblings. It is alleged that Kimbo fought his first fight in school at the age of 13 while trying to defend a friend. He went to Miami Palmetto High School where he was a star football player and was the quarterback. He attended Bethune-Cookman University and the University of Miami on a sports scholarship and studied criminal justice.
Professional life
He worked as a strip club bouncer until his high school friend and eventual manager, Mike Ember, offered him a job as a limo driver and bodyguard for RK Netmedia. RK Netmedia, also known as Reality Kings, is a Miami-based adult film production and promotion company. Unfortunately, Ferguson was accused of carrying a concealed weapon in 2002. In 2003, he began his career in cross-fighting in street fighting. Battle videos were mostly distributed online through the adult site Sublime Directory.
In his first recorded fight against a man named Big D, Ferguson left a massive cut in his opponent’s right eye which prompted internet fans to call him “Slice”. He stuck with the name and tagged his childhood nickname “Kimbo” with the last name “Slice” and he was born Kimbo Slice. His only loss was in a street fight on tape against Sean Gannon, a former Boston police officer who was also trained in mixed martial arts. The popularity of the fight propelled both men into the MMA spotlight.

Slice made his MMA debut against former WBO Heavyweight Champion Ray Mercer at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5, in Atlantic City on June 23, 2007. The match was scheduled to be a three-round show with all professional rules of an MMA fighter. Slice defeated Mercer by strangling the guillotine in 1:12 in the first round. On October 11, 2007, Proelite.com announced that it had signed the Slice deal. Kimbo went on to defeat Cantrell 19 seconds into the first round by giving up due to punches. Icey Mike Imber is not only one of Kimbo’s best friends, but he’s also run Kimbo’s career from day one.
In May 2008, Slice debuted as the main fighting event for the first-ever MMA event to be shown on primetime television network EliteXC: Primetime. EliteXC was forced to file for bankruptcy in October of the same year. After they discontinued operations, Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana Whitewold Slice if he wanted to compete for the UFC, he would have to compete first on the TV show “The Ultimate Fighter.” Slice appeared on the show and fought and defeated Houston Alexander on December 5, 2009. Slice paid his official salary per show and heavy debt to the UFC on May 8, 2010. However, he was short-lived: he lost to Matt Mitrione and Wyatt was released from the UFC.
After his career with the UFC ended, Slice announced his intention to become a professional boxer in August 2010. He made his professional boxing debut on August 13, 2011 in Miami, Oklahoma and won his first fight against James Wade via KO in just ten seconds in the first round. He was scheduled to make his professional wrestling debut in February 2011 against sumo wrestler Shinichi Suzukawa in Japan but withdrew from the match due to injury. Slice returned to the boxing ring two months later and defeated Ty Bledsoe in the first round. He next fought in Australia in January 2013, defeating Shane Tillard in the second round.
Five years after his last MMA fight, Bellator MMA announced that Slice had signed a multiple fight deal in January 2015. He defeated Ken Shamrock by TKO in his debut at Bellator 138 on June 19, 2015. Slice faced Dada 5000 in his next match at Belator 149 On February 19, 2016. He went on to win via TKO when Dada collapsed from exhaustion in the third round. After the match, it was reported that traces of stimulants were found in a drug test before the fight at Slice. He was fined $2,500 by the Texas Athletic Commission, his fighting license was revoked, and his match status was changed to No Contest. Bellator chief Scott Coker announced in April 2016 that Slice would have a second match against James Thompson on July 15, 2016 at the O2 Arena in London, but unfortunately Slice died before the fight could begin.

Slice married L. Shontae Ferguson in May 1994. They have three children, RaeChelle, Kevin II, and Kevinah. Slice also had three grandchildren and a granddaughter. At the time of his death, Kimbo was engaged for a long time in love with Antionette Ray.

Kimbo was hospitalized on June 5, 2016 near his home in Coral Springs, Florida. He died on June 6, 2016 of heart failure at the age of 42. An autopsy also revealed a mass in his liver when he died.
