Google has just reinvented search with landscape exploration – here’s how it works

About eight years ago, I reviewed a file amazon fire phoneA short-lived device that is quickly gone, thanks to a slow processor, low-resolution screen, and short battery life. Perhaps the only interesting feature of the Fire Phone is something called Firefly, which can not only identify products but can also take you to Amazon so you can buy it afterwards.

Google’s new landscape exploration feature seems to have taken that idea and made it exponentially more useful. Scene Exploration, announced at Google I/O 2022, will let you point your phone’s camera at an object and then ask a question to help filter your results. And you can pan while doing this to scan multiple objects in real time.

For example, a presenter at Google I/O showed a shelf of candy bars, then asked Scene Exploration to highlight those that were highly rated, nut-free and made with dark chocolate. Then Scene Exploration highlighted a few chocolate bars, along with ratings for each. And, of course, he gave you a way to buy them if you wanted.
