The 95th Academy Awards Announces 2023 Premiere Date, And It’s Closer Than Usually

While controversy still rages over aspects of last year’s Academy Awards, from the infamous slap to the introduction of fan voting categories, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 95th Academy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, March 12, 2023. That’s the earliest The show has been in it since 2020, when it took place on February 9th. The show is scheduled to air live on ABC as well as in more than 200 regions around the world, broadcasting from the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood.

The Academy has also released a list of key dates leading up to the 2022 Oscars season. Here is the schedule:

  • The deadline for submission of general entry categories is Tuesday 15 November 2022
  • Governor Awards Saturday 19 November 2022
  • Preliminary voting begins at 9am PT on Monday 12th December 2022
  • Preliminary voting ends at 5 PM PT on Thursday, December 15, 2022
  • The Oscar shortlists will be announced on Wednesday, December 21, 2022
  • Eligibility period ends Saturday 31 December 2022
  • Voting for nominations begins at 9am PT Thursday, January 12, 2023
  • Voting for nominations ends at 5 PM PT on Tuesday, January 17, 2023
  • Oscar nominations announced Tuesday, January 24, 2023
  • Oscar Numenez Lunch Monday 13 February 2023
  • Final voting begins at 9am PT Thursday, March 2, 2023
  • Final voting ends at 5 PM PT on Tuesday, March 7, 2023
  • 95th Academy Awards Sunday 12 March 2023

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences describes itself as “a global community of more than 10,000 of the most accomplished artists, filmmakers, and CEOs working in the field of film. In addition to celebrating and recognizing excellence in filmmaking through the Academy Awards, the Academy supports a wide range of initiatives to promote the art of filmmaking.” The science of film, including public programming, educational outreach, and the Academic Museum of the Moving Image.”

This year, Koda won Best Picture. Will Smith accepted his Best Actor award shortly after he slapped Chris Rock on stage. The Academy punished Smith by banning him from the event for a decade. By then, Smith had resigned from the academy.
