New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman may have blocked the way for Freddy Freeman to sign a contract north of its total value.
Freeman went on to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but there was a reason why both the Braves and Yanks failed to add to his sixth-year contract offer.
In the end, Los Angeles did, paying Freeman six years for $162 million to sign with his childhood team. Freeman grew up in California, so if he wasn’t going to re-sign with the Braves, going home made a lot of sense.
However, could the Yankees be a potential destination? recent report by Bob Clapish Cashman suggests that “prevent Steinbrenner from overpaying Freddy Freeman, and instead bet on the more modest Anthony Rizzo.”

Rizzo’s electric start to the 2022 season has kept most fans happy, and Cashman seems smart if this is his call to cancel any Freeman contract.

“That’s worth thinking about a few things. Could Cashman have been influenced by Steinbrenner’s frugal ways and now act in a more strategic way rather than a tough one? Or was he staring at a barrel financially tied up by Steinbrenner down the road had he signed Freeman on a six-year deal? Or is it actually not being sold on Freeman and the amount of money he was looking for?”
If it’s either of the latter, Cashman apparently talked to his boss about making a move that he felt would constrain the franchise financially in the coming years.
To be fair, Cashman’s job description is to run the Yankees’ baseball operations division. If he does not have the funds to do so in the near future, the field product will not reflect what we expected from New York.
A little over a month later, it’s hard to argue with Cashman’s lobbyists.
