Prequel “The Hunger Games” Cast Tom Blythe as Snow Coriolanus

Tom Blythe heads to Banem. The actor, best known for the songs “Billy the Kid” and “The Gilded Age,” was cast as the young president Coriolanus Snow in the Lionsgate prequel The Hunger Games titled “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”

The movie is based on the 2020 book of the same name, which takes place decades before Katniss Everdeen’s exploits in “The Hunger Games.” This means that the lovable heroine, a role that catapulted Jennifer Lawrence to stardom, does not appear in “Song of Songbirds and Snakes,” which instead focuses on the man (portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original trilogy) who eventually becomes the tyrannical boss of Panem. A prequel story takes place when 18-year-old Snow is chosen to be the mentor of Lucy Gray Bird, a salute girl from impoverished District 12, during the tenth edition of The Hunger Games, a televised event in which teenagers are chosen by lottery to fight to the death.

The “The Hunger Games” films began as a volunteer Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) as a tribute to taking her younger sister’s place at the 74th annual Hunger Games. Along with Lawrence, the films starred in Josh Hutcherson as Peta Millark, Liam Hemsworth as Jill Hawthorne and Woody Harrelson. As Himmitch Abernathy, Elizabeth Banks as Evie Trinket, and Sutherland as President Coriolanus Snow.

Susan Collins’ bestselling series “The Hunger Games” was first published in 2008 and spawned a sequel, which was later developed into four films. These films combined grossed $3 billion at the global box office and propelled Jennifer Lawrence, who played series heroine Katniss Everdeen, to stardom.

“Hunger Games” veteran Frances Lawrence is back to direct the upcoming movie, which will begin production later this year. Michael Arndt, who wrote the second part of the series “Catching Fire”, writes the script. “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will be released in theaters on November 17, 2023.
