Is there a way to restore face filters on Instagram after Texas “ban”?

Earlier this month, several Instagram users in Texas were outraged when some filters were used Removal in the state.

Why are Instagram filters banned?

Some Instagram filters for Texas users have been removed due to a file lawsuit Filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

“Facebook unlawfully seized the biometric identifiers of Texas for a commercial purpose without their informed consent, disclosed these identifiers to others and failed to destroy the collected identifiers within a reasonable time.”

It also claims that this violates the Texas “Biometric Identifier Use” law.

In response, Meta has disabled all augmented reality filters related to facial recognition, including those that use 3D overlays, change your appearance, or add accessories, such as dog ears or makeup.

Any filters that do not use this technology and change color, hue, or lighting are still available in Texas.

Is there a way to get it back?

At the time of writing this article, there is no way to get back the face filters that have been blocked on Instagram in Texas.

However, in a statmentMeta has revealed that it will soon introduce an Instagram feature in Texas that will allow users to opt in or out of facial recognition technology.

If you opt in, the face filters will return, but if you choose to opt out, the face filters will still be ‘Blocked’. Meta has not revealed when this new option will become available.

Some users claimed The face filters returned on Tuesday (May 17) after they turned off location services in their phone settings, but this has not been confirmed and it still appears to be disabled for several accounts.

Meta denies violating laws

In the same statement, Meta denied using facial recognition technology that violates any laws in its filters.

They reassured users, “The technology we use to operate augmented reality effects such as avatars and filters is not facial recognition or any technology covered by Texas and Illinois laws, and is not used to identify anyone.”

Meta continued: “However, we are taking this step to prevent baseless and distracting litigation under the laws in these two countries based on a misunderstanding of how our features work.”

The company also said it “remains committed to delivering augmented reality experiences that people love without ‘undue friction or confusion’.”

At the time of writing, it is unclear when these facial features will become available again. HITC has reached out to Meta for comment.
