Korean films sell out ahead of Cannes, market launch

Epic Pictures Releasing has licensed the North American rights to the Korean action movie “Hot Blooded” from leading Seoul-based film sales agency Finecut. The deal is one of several the agency struck in advance of Cannes, also calling sales of the Critics’ Week title ‘Next Sohee’.

Starring Bae Donna and Kim Si Yeon, ‘Next Sohee’ is directed by Jung July, who played the acclaimed ‘A Girl at My Door’ in Un Certain in 2014. It tells the story of a detective investigating the death of a working call center.

“Hot Blooded”, screenwriter Cheon Myeong-kwan’s (“Whale”) debut, has been licensed by Finecut to Japan (New Select), Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia (CJ ENM Hong Kong) and the Philippines (Viva Networks). This is in addition to previous deals for France (Jokers Films), Thailand, Cambodia and Laos (M Pictures).

Finecut has closed several deals for “Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On,” an animated film that examines working conditions in Korea, to Hong Kong, Macau (Edko Films) and Taiwan (Cai Chang Intl.) and the plane in Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines (Poverato).

“Hot Blooded” and “Chun Tae-il” will be receiving performances at Cannes this week.

The company recently struck deals on its two first-time female directors, which were presented in Berlin in February. The Hill of Secrets, which recently won the CGV Arthouse Award for Upcoming Project Award at the 23rd Gyeongju International Film Festival and was subsequently invited to the Zlin Film Festival, was awarded to Edko for Hong Kong and Macau, and AV-Jet Intl. for Taiwan. “Two Women” has been licensed to Harakiri Films for Japan and Edko for Hong Kong and Macau.

Another title in Berlin, Hong Sang-soo’s “Feature”, added sales deals with Midas Films for Portugal, Grandfilm for Germany and Austria, with Acephale for Canada and with AV-Jet for Taiwan.

“Contorted,” a genre title about a family and disturbing events in their new home, has been licensed to Lumix Media in Vietnam, to Cai Chang Intl. for Taiwan, New Select for Japan and Viva Networks for the Philippines.
