WWE Hall of Famer Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat Rejects Ric Flair’s Match Show

Recent reports have indicated that WWE Icon Ric Flair is training for a return to the ring, and the match, which is said to be a Six-Man Tag match, will be played by Starrcast V in Nashville, Tennessee during WWE’s SummerSlam weekend. Flair will confirm the match will happen but has not revealed who will be participating. Then a report surfaced recently that another WWE icon was asked to be a part of that match, and that the icon is Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat. While signing at Highspots Superstore tonight, Steamboat spoke about the match and confirmed that he had been asked to be Flair’s opponent, but also revealed that he turned down the offer, and explained his reasons behind the decision.

Well, I was called and I really gave it some serious thought,” Steamboat said. “Lots of respect for the man in the ring. You know, we’re both day and night when it comes to things outside the ring. Flair wouldn’t be without her. I thought about it for a week and only recently turned it down. I know that when I faced Jericho at WrestleMania 25, we had a rematch at Backlash in singles, but at 69, and I know it’s a six-man card and I can get a little bit of this and that in, but with all due respect to our fans, I want them to remember me the last time I was with Jericho when they chanted, “You still get it.” I don’t want to frighten this phrase.”

“Up until that night with Jericho, you know, I was working in WWE. I was one of the coaches in school and I was very active in the ring, so I had a lot of confidence in myself,” Steamboat said. “But knowing Ricky now and not being in the ring for a number of years, I don’t want to tarnish the memory fans have of me. It’s going to be a good day, sure, but I don’t want them to think, ‘Maybe he should have stayed retired.’ You know, and I could get out. out there and maybe take it out and say, “Well, you know, for a 69-year-old he sure did a pretty good job,” but that’s a double-edged sword, isn’t it?”

“So, you know, the Dragon has a lot of pride in his work and in the way fans remember me in the ring, and I want that lasting impression. I know my physical abilities now. I would like to be able to go out there and perform like I did with Jericho. I was 56 Or 57, but I think I want my fans to remember me for being that guy and not have a chance to get their hopes up. That’s how much I love my fans,” Steamboat said.

The match is said to be a Six-Man Tag match that includes Rock N’ Roll Express, who will team up with someone to take on FTR and Flair. FTR and Rock N’ Roll Express have yet to be officially revealed for the match, and it now looks like they will need another wrestler to join the match to make it happen.
