Apple claims 51% market share in the US amid inflation and supply chain problems

Despite the rising inflation in the US, smartphone shipments reached a new high in the first quarter of 2022. The report comes from Canalys, a global technology market analyst which states that the total volume of shipments grew nearly 4% from the previous period from last year. With this growth, Apple dominated sales, far outpacing its competition.

Apple dominated the market in North America, claiming a 51 percent share, up 19 percent from the previous year. Apple was able to achieve this with strong sales of the iPhone 13. Due to the uncertainty in international markets, Canalys reported that Apple shifted inventory to North America, after an early push to other regions of the world. This re-prioritization allowed to capture a larger market share by fulfilling and delivering pre-orders. She also notes that outside of the iPhone 13, Apple has great potential with its iPhone SE, capturing a new demographic with its affordable options.

After Apple, Samsung only had a percentage, despite its large product range, giving it a total market share of 27 percent. While Canalys doesn’t provide many details, Samsung has had solid sales for its Galaxy S line, as well as its foldable smartphones, notably the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Surprisingly, Lenovo took third place to replace LG, which left the position after The smartphone business closed early last year. Lenovo has managed to penetrate the lower and mid-range markets, focusing on prepaid products. Despite Google’s recent push with its Pixel devices, it only managed to capture 3 percent of the total market share. But Canalys says that could change this year with the company releasing the Pixel 7, Pixel 6a, Pixel Watch, and Pixel Buds Pro series.

Despite high inflation rates, North American carriers have been able to maintain sales attractiveness by offering great discounts or excellent handling rates. Of course, going forward, it will be an uphill battle as supply chain issues still plague most industries. “The North American market is well positioned to avoid any significant volatility in shipments despite the uncertain outlook for its economy,” concludes Canalys.
