Kirby 64: Crystal Shards Now available as part of the Nintendo 64 app for the Nintendo Switch Online. As with all previous N64 versions, Kirby 64 Only available to those who have upgraded to the expansion pack subscription tier. The game represents the 15th available N64 game, and it was announced to the service last week. The N64 classic was supposed to be released on May 20, but Nintendo makes it a habit of releasing these games a few hours earlier than scheduled. This is good news for those eager to check out a retro Kirby picnic!

While N64 games like Super Mario 64 And The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Bringing Nintendo’s heroes to 3D, Kirby 64 has kept the classic 2D gameplay. In fact, Kirby won’t even have a 3D main series game until Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which was released on Switch earlier this year. But, Kirby 64 It still managed to make some fun improvements to the formula. Notably, the game introduced Power Combos, where Kirby combines different copy capabilities. The game also made use of the system’s four control ports, with three multiplayer mini-games. While Kirby 64 It may not be the most revolutionary entry in the series, it offers a fun adventure worth checking out!
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Kirby franchise. While Nintendo and HAL Laboratory have hinted at plans to mark the occasion, many announcements have not been made, yet. The character’s twentieth anniversary witnessed the launch Kirby’s Dream Collectiona collection of classic Kirby games, including Kirby 64. Many of the games in this collection are currently available through Nintendo Switch Online, so it seems unlikely that we’ll see the compilation ported to the Switch, but hopefully Nintendo will have a few more surprises in store for Kirby fans before 2022 comes to a close!
