Omar Sea Star “Father and Soldier” sells to Gaumont’s main markets

Gaumont struck major deals on Matthew Fadipied’s World War I drama “Father and Soldier,” which is led by “Lupin” star Omar C. The film premiered on the opening night of Un Certain Regard in Cannes.

“Father & Soldier” has been sold to Latin America (Digital Sofa), Germany, Austria (Weltkino), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Spain (A Contracorriente), Italy (Minerva), Benelux (Athens), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), the former Yugoslavia (Cinema Group) Indonesia (Falcon) and French-speaking Africa (Pathe BC Africa).

Exploring Africa’s forgotten war heroes, the film begins during World War I, in 1917, in the French colony of Senegal. Sy plays Bakari, a father who enlists in the army to stay by Thierno’s side, his 17-year-old son, who is recruited against his will. Father and son together must fight World War I in the trenches in France. Tierno is ready to sacrifice his life to fight for France, a country about which little is known. Meanwhile, his father sets out to protect him at all costs.

Vadepied made his directorial debut with “Learn by Heart”, which premiered at Critics’ Week in Cannes. Vadepied has also worked as an art director and cinematographer on “Untouchable”, and Olivier Nacache and Eric Toledano’s 2010 comedy hit with acting hits and earned Cesar’s nod.

“Father & Soldier” was produced by Bruno Nahon Unité (“A Good Doctor”) and Sy’s production vehicle Korokoro. Gaumont, who has produced major “Lupine” and Sy films including “Untouchable” and “Samba”, is also a co-producer of “Father & Soldier”.

Speaking of this film, Sy said it came together at a time in his life when he felt “the need to connect the cultures and histories of two countries which made me bigger – as a producer, along with Yonte, and as an actor – in to honor these deserving men”.

Vadepied co-wrote the film with Olivier Demangel, whose credits include Cannes Prize-winning Mati Diop’s “Atlantics.” Vadepied also directed several episodes of “En Therapie”, “Nakache” and “Toledano”, the French series adapted from the Israeli show “Betipul”.

Co-producers are Marivonne Le Muir and Caroline Nataf. Co-producers of the film are Sy Possible Africa, Milles Soleil, Gaumont, France 3 Cinéma and Canal Plus et Ciné Plus.
