Willson Contreras trade that works for the Cubs too

The Houston Astros can use an upgrade in the catcher, and given that they have money to spend now that Carlos Correa is gone, could Willson Contreras’ trade be brewing?

FanSided’s MLB writer Tim Boyle identified the Astros as likely a good fit for Contreras in an article just a few days ago, explaining that current Houston options don’t have the same offensive upside that Cubs support regularly offers.

Martin Maldonado and Jason Castro are fine behind the board, but both are headed to the bottom of the Houston roster.

“An injury to either catcher makes this move a lot more obvious for Houston. Because they’re going to have to DFA one of them, there’s already a hurdle in place. Houston could always turn one of those catchers into a team that needed an upgrade to act as a prop. Only because it might require another treat doesn’t.” It means we should rule out the possibility of MLB rumors linking the Astros with the best mask available on this year’s trade deadline,” Boyle wrote.

For now, the Astros may be tempted not to make a drastic change to the supporting duo – but let’s play with the assumptions.

Astros: Willson Contreras business working for the Cubs

Quite frankly, it doesn’t make sense for the Astros to pursue Contreras as something more than a short-term commitment. If the Cubs were anticipating significant potential capital for him as a long-term venture, they would be wrong to do so in talks with Houston.

why is that? Well, Houston’s top player is Corey Lee, a 23-year-old fisherman. A long-term investment in a pillar like Contreras will ensure Lee never gets a chance at this position in the major tournaments. If we’ve learned anything about Houston, it’s that they trust their development team and farm system.

Wilson Contreras

Alex Santos

Scott Manya

Jimmy Endersby

The Cubs don’t need to get help in return, as they sign Manny Piña this off season.

Santos is the real gem of this deal. At only 20 years old and probability number 8 overall in this system, he would be fast-rising in Chicago. Coming out of the draft in 2020, the Santos was considered one of the best off-the-shelf guns ever to come out of New York City. There is a reason for that.

Manya can be a backup hunter in Chicago right away if they need him. At 26 years old and one of the top 20 potentials, maybe something else. Meanwhile, Endersby isn’t a majestic pitcher by any means. At 24 years old at Double-A, he could call the adults this year or next.

It may seem like a lot on the surface, but keep in mind that the Cubs will have many suitors for Contreras. In this scenario — as Houston has to bid on Contreras — they will have to let go of some middle-class expectations. It’s just a way to the baseball world.
