“Disappointing news” and “PS3” go together like Questions and clatter. Arguably the most disappointing flagship PlayStation console yet, Sony has gotten it wrong a lot with the PS3. Only one of these bugs has haunted Sony well beyond the PS3 years, and that’s the console architecture. The PS3 has its own unique chassis that doesn’t play well with anything. It was difficult to develop this unique architecture, and since then, Sony has given a big problem regarding backwards compatibility. Simply put, games built according to PS3 architecture are not easy to play on other hardware, which is why backwards compatibility for PS3 has been limited to streaming. There is some grumbling that may change in the near future, but it hasn’t changed yet.
The PS3 is getting more attention than usual lately due to the launch of the new PS Plus next month. Depending on the level, PS Plus subscribers will soon have access to backwards compatible PlayStation games, including PS3 games. You will only be able to stream these PS3 games, and unfortunately, this is not the only problem.
Sony has confirmed that PS3 games available via PS Plus will not support DLC in any capacity. As you may remember, DLC was a big thing during the PS3 generation. During that generation, many of the biggest games not only got one premium DLC version, but several premium DLC releases. Why DLC is not supported, we don’t know. Sony doesn’t go into detail regarding this issue, but that’s because it assumes it’s extra work.
