Final Fantasy X’s Controversial Feature Is Now a Star Wars Canon

Star Wars Brotherhood Released earlier this month, the novel contains a number of Easter eggs for fans to discover. Writer Mike Chen recently posted a thread on Twitter highlighting some of these, and it seems like one of the most interesting isn’t a Star Wars reference at all! In the novel, Chen refers to Blitzball, a sport played in a lake. naturally, Final Fantasy X You also happen to have an underwater sport with that name, and Chen confirmed that the connection is intentional. Apparently the writer was a huge fan of the sport, and wanted to bring it into the Star Wars universe!

“There is a reference to a sport called Blitzball that is played in a local lake. Blitzball is basically an underwater hockey game that is played as a small game in Final Fantasy X. As a former NHL writer, I loved Blitzball and spent hours winning leagues,” Chen wrote on Twitter.

While it may seem unusual to see a reference to Final Fantasy in a Star Wars novel, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen connective tissue between the two franchises. Most notably, the X-Wing Wedge Antilles and Biggs Darklighter pilots have been referenced in a number of different Final Fantasy games, including Final Fantasy VII. After decades of watching Star Wars referenced in the series, it’s really interesting to see it go the other way!

First released in 2001, Final Fantasy XThe main character is Tidus, the star of Blitzball. Sports play a major role in the game’s narrative, and it’s one of the elements that can be frustrating for some players! While the sport remains a controversial part of the game after more than 20 years, Final Fantasy X It is still considered one of the best games in the series. In fact, it’s the first Final Fantasy game to get a direct sequel, and many are still hoping for a third game!
