Thor and Valkyrie team up with Jane Foster against Mephisto

As fans are still celebrating the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in the official Thor: Love and Thunder promo, Marvel comics are also revisiting her time as the goddess of thunder. Whereas Jane was previously Thor, she now has the title of superhero Valkyrie. Jane Foster, along with Nighthawk, Namor, and Echo, have officially joined the Avengers in their fight against the Mephisto and Mephisto Masters of Evil. Mephisto has established himself as the central villain in Jason Aaron Avengers Run, and the latest edition pits Valkyrie and Mighty Thor against a trio of Mephisto variants from the multiverse.

Warning: Follow spoilers for Avengers #56. Continue reading at your own risk.

Avengers #56 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garon, David Curiel and VC’s Corey Petty starts with Jane Foster married to Thor. The couple seem to enjoy a simple life together, with Jane being a loyal housewife and a bull like a heroic avenger. However, things are not as they seem. Jane’s memories are vague, and she has no recollection of the time she spent as both The Mighty Thor and Valkyrie. After capturing Mjolnir, Jane realizes that the Asgardian hammer is fake and uses it to strike her husband. Thor’s situation begins to fade, and Jin is then attacked by their three demonic pet pigs. Those pigs turn out to be three versions of Mephisto from the Multiverse, who set out to set a “temptation” for Jane Foster before taking her own life.

Before Mephistos can attack, another Mjolnir falls from the sky and is joined by the multiverse Mighty Thor, who senses Jane’s danger and decides to investigate. With her memories restored, Jane turns to Valkyrie to team up with The Mighty Thor in a resounding throw. Mephistos recognize when they outgrow it and disappear into the night. We learn that this mighty Thor has been holding the mantle since the original Thor Odinson’s death during the War of the Worlds over her realm. Jane Foster was searching for Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes) in the Lower Realms when she was kidnapped. Fortunately, Mjolnir Mighty Thor sensed that Jane was in trouble and decided to help.

The Mighty Thor fills the Valkyrie in Masters of Evil, the Mephistos Corps and their Red Council, God’s Quarry, Lone Avenger, Prehistoric Avengers and “Generation Point”, and much more. All of these events happened in Avengers And Avengers forever, which is also written by Aaron. One last fight looms, but for now, Avengers #56 He ends up teasing something more personal. While Jen’s temptation seemed to be to be a Thor-loving housewife, she can’t help but focus on Mjolnir and being The Mighty Thor again, especially after fighting alongside her surrogate.

Marvel currently has Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson co-stars in the Captain America mantle, so there’s no reason why Odinson and Jane Foster can’t be Thor. In addition, we also have Peter Parker and Miles Morales as Spider-Man, and Clint Barton and Kate Bishop as Hawkeye as other examples. The Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor mini-series features Jane returning alongside Thor as she fights alongside the original, so perhaps Marvel is slowly moving in that direction.
