Law & Order loses fan-favourite cast member after first revival season

The original Law & Order made a successful comeback to TV in its season 21 revival this year, and it’s already been renewed for season 22. Sadly when a famous character returns from the show he won’t be making the return trip, and that’s Detective Anthony Anderson Kevin Bernard. A favorite during his original run with the show before its cancellation, Anderson was one of the returning cast members when the show was rerun. According to Deadline, Anderson chose not to reprise his role in Season 22, and now he will begin the search for another lead investigator.

According to sources, Anderson wanted to support Law & Order creator Dick Wolf in releasing the show for one season and then always planned to move forward after that, only signing a one-year deal when he joined the revival. It would be frustrating for fans of the series, myself included, because Anderson’s character was one of the main reasons the revival was so successful.

Anderson wasn’t the only cast member to sign a one-year deal, Law & Order icon Sam Waterston (who plays Jack McCoy) also signed a one-year deal for season 21. It’s unknown if he’ll do so. He returns for season 22, but the good news is that he appeared on stage in NBCUniversal’s presentation, promoting all the big NBC shows for next season, so he might be in the mix again.

As for Anderson’s character, Bernard didn’t exit the show at the end of the season, which is why it came as a surprise that he did. We’ll have to wait to see how they handle his exit in the season premiere, but this isn’t the first time a lead actor has left the series between seasons, and they’ll probably leave things open until he can. Come back to some engraving later if opportunity arises.
