“I was a thirteen-year-old kid and my life was kind of uprooted by this disease,” the musician and actor told me Wednesday at the Big Fighters, Big Cause charity boxing match at the Beverly Hilton. the hotel. “I didn’t really know anyone in the public eye who was living with him at the time.”
Three years later, when the Jonas Brothers were one of the most popular boy bands, the Jonas was publicly in good shape.
“If you’ve shared my story over the past 16 years that has helped anyone, that’s the point,” he said.
He was honored by the foundation with this year’s Golden Glove award for his advocacy of diabetes. “I look up to the people who helped me during my journey – my family and friends – and tonight I want to be with them,” Jonas said. “But they decided to give me that honor and it feels kinda weird in some ways, but I’m really grateful.”
The Jonas Brothers will be on stage early next month for five nights of shows in Las Vegas. “We are preparing some special things for our fans,” Jonas said. “They would help us pick out the set menu each night. We all walked around our homes and grabbed a bunch of personalized mementos that we would sell for $1 each at a pawnshop to thank them for their constant support.”

The charity event took place just a day after the mass shooting in Ovaldi, Texas, that killed 19 children and two adults. Jonas tweeted about the massacre, saying, “My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has lost a loved one in this horrific tragedy and all the recurring tragedies in recent weeks, months and years. But having said that, we all know thoughts and prayers are not enough.”
He also tweeted a link to Mom’s Demand Action, a group calling for solutions to end gun violence. “As a father, as an uncle, I cannot think of the children and all the lives lost,” Jonas told me. “I hope that change will happen and we will see the end of this.”
